Suspects caught with thousands of crayfish tails

Officers from Overstrand Municipality’s Task Team, LEAP and the Land Invasion Unit confiscated West Coast Lobster tails worth more than half a million rand during the early hours on Sunday morning, 19 November 2023.

The law enforcement officers were doing crime prevention patrols on the R43 between Hermanus and the Kleinmond crossing, when they noticed a white Toyota Hilux bakkie with a missing rear registration numberplate, driving reckless and with high speed.

The members tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and sped away with the Task Team in pursuit. They succeeded in stopping the bakkie on the N2 near Houw Hoek.

A total of 13 bags containing 12 023 crayfish tails were found in the vehicle. The estimated value of the crayfish is R602 000. The 43-year-old suspect was arrested and taken with the goods to the Grabouw SAPS.
